| Brazilian
production company Gatacine has confirmed the screening date of "La Riña"
at the Marché du Film during the Cannes Festival. The new feature film
by Marcelo Galvão will be officially presented to the trade market on May
17 at 10 p.m. at Palais K. Gatacine has arranged meetings to discuss business
opportunities related to the distribution of "La Riña". During
the occasion, it will also present other projects and reveal its strategy to operate
in the international co-production market. Polemical
Script Based
on true stories, "La Riña" highlights the polemic of bare knuckle
fights in a playboy party where drugs and drinks are served on silver trays. It
is an action film with a dense drama and an ironic sense of humor. Instead of
showing typical poverty in Brazil, "La Riña" unveils the opposite
by unmasking a luxurious and sick elite in Sao Paulo. The
plot consists of a secret party thrown by ex-students from the American school
who bet fortunes in poor wrestlers confronting each other inside an empty swimming
pool for a few dollars. Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Marcelo Galvão knows the ground
and brought professional wrestlers to the set, assuring realism in the fights.
Business Approach Galvão bets on the international market
as fundamental ground for the creation of a film industry in Brazil. "La
Riña" was shot in English to reach a wider global audience and improve
its distribution potential. The
new feature film is expected to profit, so it can finance Gatacine's next enterprise
- "Colegas" (Colleagues), a poetic road movie with three actors with
Down Syndrome. Another
strategic issue regards Gatacinescola, school created by Marcelo Galvão
that offers a three-month course to teach 12 students how to make a feature film.
Pupils had the last part of classes in the set as direction assistants, getting
therefore practical experience. There are plans of transforming this educational
initiative behind La Riña production into TV series. The whole
backstage has been registered since October 2007 on the official blog: www.rinhaofilme.com/news
Instead of depending on the government or marketing directors, Galvão
has been visionary and audacious to pave the way to create a sustainable industry.
Thus Gatacine demonstrates a business-oriented approach in its creative endeavors:
a feature film must profit based on a sound financial planning to fund the next
production also independently. The solution consists of a simple formula applied
by all industries simply translated into the Brazilian feature film reality.
